When to visit Val Thorens? Choosing the best time based on snow, crowds and budget

Val Thorens generally opens its pistes around late November and keeps them skiable until early May, which makes for one of the longest seasons in the Alps. The right moment depends above all on three criteria: the snow you are after, the crowds you can tolerate and the budget you want to devote to your stay. Here are our pointers to decide with confidence.

Why is the season so long in Val Thorens?

Perched at around 2,300 metres, Val Thorens is Europe’s highest resort, backed by the Péclet glacier that rises above 3,200 metres. This exceptional altitude guarantees reliable, long-lasting snow cover, from the start to the end of winter. Linked to the 3 Vallées ski area, billed as the largest in the world, this ski-in/ski-out resort offers snow conditions that few French destinations can claim for so long.

In practical terms, there is no bad time to ski in Val Thorens: every month has its strengths. The choice therefore comes down to your profile and your priorities, not to the fear of running short of snow.

Start of the season: late November and December

The opening, around late November, marks the launch of the season with a much-anticipated festive event. The snow is fresh, the pistes are clear and the mood is enthusiastic. It is an ideal time for skiers who love to break trail before the crowds.

Early December stays quiet and is often good value, ahead of the ramp-up to the holidays. Be aware, however: at this point in the season, the ski area is not always fully open, as snow cover gradually settles on the lower sectors of the 3 Vallées. The Christmas and New Year weeks, on the other hand, see heavy crowds and high prices, in an incomparable festive atmosphere.

Mid-winter: January and February

January is the connoisseurs’ well-kept secret. Outside the Christmas holidays, the resort regains its calm, the days slowly grow longer and snow cover is generally optimal. Prices soften again, notably during the so-called “white January” weeks, an excellent compromise between quality snow, uncrowded pistes and moderate prices.

February changes the picture entirely. It is the month of the winter school holidays, spread across roughly four weeks between zones A, B and C. Snow cover is at its peak and the atmosphere is electric, but it is also the busiest and most expensive period of the season. A few pointers for choosing your February week:

• The first and last days of a zone are often a little less saturated than the heart of the period.
• The changeover weekends between zones concentrate the journeys and traffic jams on the access roads.
• Booking from Saturday to Saturday, as we offer, makes organisation easier in peak season.

Spring skiing: March and April

March may be the most balanced period of the whole season. The snow layer is still deep thanks to the altitude, the days are long and bright, and the sun warms the terraces. Crowds drop off noticeably after the February holidays, while spring skiing offers pleasant sensations and softer gliding in the afternoon.

April extends this pleasure until the closing, usually scheduled for early May. Prices often fall, the mood is relaxed and the sunshine is generous. It is the perfect moment for a sociable stay blending skiing in the morning, relaxation in the afternoon and long evenings. School holidays or outside them: what to choose?

It all depends on your constraints. Families with school-age children naturally settle on the Christmas and February breaks, at the cost of higher crowds and prices. Those with more flexibility have every interest in aiming for January, the first half of December or the second half of March, to enjoy a less crowded area and better rates.
